The character and consequences of
An Unteachable Spirit.
An unteachable spirit has distressing and disappointing characteristics and consequences. God puts a
premium on being teachable and gives stern warning about anything otherwise. Eight times in His
earthly ministry Jesus said, "He that hath an ear let him hear" as well as eight times in the book of Revelation.
1. The first characteristic of an unteachable spirit is not listening. Those that have this spirit will not hear
instruction and actually come to a point of despising someone telling them what to do. This spirit is shown in
numerous places in the Word of God:
Zechariah 7:11 But they refused to hearken and pulled away the shoulder, and stopped their ears, that they should not hear.
Jeremiah 25:4 And the Lord hath sent unto you all His servants the prophets, rising early and sending
them; but ye have not hearkened, nor inclined your ear to hear.
Psalm 50:17 Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee.
2. Tehe second characteristic is seeking the wrong counsel. They go to those that tell them what they
want to hear instead of the truth they need to hear.
Isaiah 30:1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the LORD, that take counsel, but not of me; and that
cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin:
Hebrews 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from
the living God.
3. The third characteristic is self justification. This is shown in those who are always excusing themselves
and carnally trying to reason out their own way. The Bible teaches we should honestly examine and judge
ourselves by the Word of God.
2 Corinthians 10:12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some
that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among
themselves, are not wise.
2 Corinthians 13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not
your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
4. The fourth characteristic is pride and stubbornness. Arrogantly and conceitedly ignoring instruction
and warning, they are too proud to honestly admit they are wrong. They would rather argue than to consent to
the wholesome teachings of God.
1 Timothy 6:3-4 If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of
our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
4 He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife,
railings, evil surmisings,
2 Peter 2:10 But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government.
Presumptuous are they, selfwilled, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
5. The fifth and last characteristic we want to show is a spirit that is easily offended. Not realizing that
wisdom, knowledge, and instruction bring us closer to God, they fail to see or grasp the truth of these scriptures:
Proverbs 9:8-9 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
Proverbs 27:5-6 Open rebuke is better than secret love.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.
Jesus taught, rebuked, scolded, disciplined, and admonished sternly, yet said in Matthew 11:6 And blessed is
he that shall not be offended in me.
Psalm 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
The spirit of offense is indeed the prevailing spirit of the endtime, and a trait of an unteachable spirit.
There are, of course, serious consequences of having an unteachable spirit:
Proverbs 15:32 He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth
understanding.
1. Blessings of God will be lacking, particularly in the spiritual realm.
Proverbs 13:8 Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction...
2. Prayer will go unanswered.
Proverbs 28:9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.
3> they will be resisted by God:
James 4:6 ...God resisteth the proud...
4. Their knowledge, and understanding of God, an His truth will be incomplete
2 Timothy 3:7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
5. They will eventually receive a delusion:
2 Thessalonians 2:10-12 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because
they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
There are certainly many deceivers in our hour teaching things they ought not, These continue to wax
worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived as warned in 2 Timothy 3:13. It is now more important than
ever to know that you have a God called preacher in your life and that God has planted you firmly in His will
so that you might be taught and receive the things of God with a teachable spirit as you faithfully do His will.
Hebrews 13:7-9 Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of
God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
9 Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established
with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein.
Ephesians 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every
wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
Jeremiah 3:15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge
and understanding.
Hebrews 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but
exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Even as an unteachable spirit is to be avoided and disdained, a teachable spirit is to be desired, and sought
after. For the truth-loving individual knows that reproofs of instruction are the way of life.
Proverbs 6:23 For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the
way of life:
Job 6:24 Teach me, and I will hold my tongue: and cause me to understand wherein I have erred.
Psalm 86:11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.
Psalm 119:33 HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.
Proverbs 8:33 HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.
Proverbs 9:9 Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
Proverbs 19:20 Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.
Proverbs 23:23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
TRUTH IS REASONABLE AT ANY PRICE.
